What is the Parent IIC? Parent Instructional Improvement Committee The Lavallette Board of Education is dedicated to improving the academic performance of all students. The Board believes that schools operate best when there is a close, cooperative relationship among all stakeholders, when there is a shared commitment to excellence between the school and the community. School-level responsibility and accountability are crucial to the improvement process. Therefore, the Board recognizes the need to move toward shared and decentralized decision making at the school level. The IIC was established as an internal mechanism to assist in the design, implementation, and assessment of reform efforts at the district level in Lavallette Elementary School. The IIC shall function as a coordinating body to assist in the decision-making process for the school community. The membership of the Parent IIC shall include the Superintendent, Unit Leaders from each Unit, the Special Subject Unit Leader, Parent Unit Leaders from each unit, the PTA President, Head Teacher, and member of the Board of Education. The Parent IIC shall function within parameters established by the Lavallette Board of Education, and Federal and State laws and regulations. School-level decisions shall support the district goals, objectives and priorities established by the Board of Education. Basic Facts: 1. The school is grouped into units: K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. 2. There are two parent reps and one teacher per grade level in each unit. 3. There is one teacher unit leader and one parent unit leader for each unit. The special subject teachers are grouped together as one added unit and have a unit leader. 4. Agendas and minutes will be maintained. 5. All unit leaders, parent and teacher, are selected by the Administrator. 6. IIC meetings with the parent unit leaders will be held once a month on the same day, week, and time for consistency. 7. Basic IGE philosophy such as goal setting, consensus, and in-service are an integral part of the educational improvement process. 8. Teachers in each unit will hold weekly or biweekly meetings. Parent reps within each unit will hold their own meetings. Any information or activity that affects one or more units will be brought to the IIC. Basic Characteristics of each Learning Community – Unit : Contains a cross section of staff and parents Provides sufficient time for members to meet Selects broad educational goals to be emphasized by the units Practices role specialization and a division of labor for planning, implementing, and assessing. Has effective internal working relationship as evidenced by members responding to one another’s needs, trusting one another’s motives and abilities, and using techniques of open communication Maintains open communication with parents and the community at large Analyzes and improves its operation as a functioning group Assures continuity of educational goals and learning objectives throughout the school and assures that they are consistent with the broad goals of the school system Formulates school-wide policies and operational procedures and resolves problems referred to it involving two or more units Coordinates school-wide in-service programs for the parents and staff Comes to consensus Instruction Improvement Committee Meeting
