Welcome to Second Grade!
This will be a wonderful year of learning in your child’s education. We will be covering a variety of new concepts, including writing in script! The children are very excited about all of their subjects. I would love to see their enthusiasm continue through the end of the year.
Please try to continue to visit our school web site
during the year. I will be posting samples of the work that the children have done in class. You can also get the nightly homework assignments and important information about second grade.
I am sure that you have questions about this school year. The information provided below is designed to answer many of those questions. I encourage you to contact me at school if you have any questions or concerns. I will gladly schedule a time to meet with you. Please contact me via the school voice mail system. The school number is (732) 793-7722 and my extension is 216. I check my messages once a day, so I will do my best to return your phone call promptly.
Please discuss the following procedures with your child.
Your continued support throughout the year will be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Hawthorne

Classroom Rules –
The students decided upon the rules during the first week of school and we posted them on the wall. The students also made individual copies to take home for you to read and sign. They are very proud of the rules they created. The children frequently remind each other to follow their rules.
Homework Policy –
Homework will be assigned every night except Friday. However, there may be occasions when it is necessary to work on a special project over the weekend.
I expect homework to be completed on the night that it is assigned. When homework is not completed on time, the student will write a letter home explaining what happened. This will be done during their recess. I will send the letter home to be signed and it should be returned to school the next day. If the homework is forgotten three times, a conference will be needed to discuss the problem.
If you find that your child is experiencing difficulty with any assignment, please make a note on the page or in the planner.
I will post the weekly homework assignments on this Second Grade web page.
Homework Planners –
This is the first year that your child will be using the school planners donated by the PTA. It is his/her responsibility to copy the homework assignments each morning from the classroom homework board.
While the students are copying down their homework assignments, I walk around to check for the signatures in the planners. If the planner is signed, the child is given a sticker. Planners are to be signed EVERY night, including Friday.
If you have a question that can be answered through a note, please write to me in the planner. I too, utilize the planner to write messages to you. This is our daily line of communication.
Math –
This is a year full of new concepts. For example, the children will be learning to add three digit numbers, add and subtract money, subtraction with borrowing, and telling time. Your child will also be getting an introduction to geometry and multiplication.
Therefore, every night, except Friday and special events, the students will have Math homework. It will usually be in their Practice Workbook.
D.E.A.R. Time (Drop Everything And Read) –
There will be a designated time when your child will be required to silently read a challenging book. Mrs. Oliver and I ask the students to choose a challenging book during their weekly Media Center time. This book is to remain in school.
Proofreading Assignments-
As a study skill, I am encouraging the children to self-monitor their work. They have been asked to check ALL of their assignments and place a small J in the upper right-hand corner of their paper. This is to show both you and I that your child has proofread. It also serves as a visual reminder for them to check. Any forgotten or incomplete questions will be marked incorrect. This is being done in preparation for a standardized testing situation.
Lucky Book Clubs –
Approximately once a month, you will be receiving a book order form in the Wednesday Folder and the attached noticed indicating the due date. It is offered to you as an opportunity to purchase relatively inexpensive reading materials for your child.
Class Birthdays –
The children are welcome to send in a small treat and/or drink for the class to enjoy. I simply ask that you give me at least one day’s notice for the purpose of planning the party into our schedule.
Field Trips –
The second grade goes on several field trips each year. As the requested trips are approved by the Board of Education, I will be passing along the information to the parents and children.
Chaperones are often needed for trips, so please indicate your interest when you return your child’s permission slip. If the Class Parents are available, they are given first choice.
Wednesday Folders –
The Wednesday Folder comes home each Wednesday afternoon. This is how the main office sends all of the important notices and/or corrected work for the week. This is also how I will send home important class papers and notices. It is important that you empty, sign, and return the folder each week.
Lunch Money –
I am asking that the children bring their lunch money to school in a wallet, change purse, baggie, or an envelope with their name on it. Each morning, the money will be collected and placed in the lunch crate. This way the children do not need to carry their money with them until lunchtime.
