April 2026

“Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s begin again.’” Author Unknown

Greetings Lavallette School Community,

As we move into April, there is a renewed sense of energy and optimism throughout our school. The arrival of spring brings longer days, warmer weather, and countless opportunities for growth - both inside and outside the classroom.

Our students continue to impress us with their curiosity, perseverance, and enthusiasm for learning. From engaging classroom projects to collaborative problem-solving, it is inspiring to see how they are applying their skills and building confidence each day. Our teachers and staff remain deeply committed to creating meaningful learning experiences that challenge and support every student.

Beyond the classroom, we are excited about the many spring activities and events that bring our community together. Whether it’s classroom celebrations, outdoor learning experiences, or PTO-sponsored events, these moments help strengthen the connections that make Lavallette Elementary such a special place.

Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support. Together, we are helping our students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful spring season!

State Assessments

April is also a time when we begin preparing for upcoming state assessments. We encourage our students to approach these opportunities with a positive mindset - viewing them as a chance to demonstrate what they know and how much they have grown. As a district, we are committed to continuing to “change the culture” around state standardized assessments. These assessments are more than a requirement - they are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate what they truly know and can do in relation to grade-level standards. We recognize that, in the past, standardized testing has sometimes been viewed as something to “get through” rather than something that reflects meaningful learning. Our goal is to shift that mindset. When students take these assessments seriously, the results provide valuable insights that help us strengthen instruction, better support individual learners, and ensure alignment with the expectations set by the state. We ask for your support at home in communicating this message so that our students participate in these assessments in a meaningful way.

“Portrait of A Graduate” Underway

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the Portrait of a Graduate survey.  Together with our staff, students, parents, and teachers at Point Beach High School, we are compiling all feedback into the work as we develop the profile of what our aspirational 8th grade graduate looks like as they leave Lavallette Elementary School and move on to high school and beyond. The final Portrait of a Graduate will be  presented to the board and the public at the June 16th BOE meeting at 4:00 PM. We hope you will join us!

Star Students!
ongratulations to our Star Students from Marking Period 3! Our Star Students shine in all the ways that matter most. They show kindness, take responsibility, work hard, and lift others up along the way. These students remind us that success isn’t just about what you know - it’s about how you show up each day. We’re proud to celebrate them as role models who reflect the values we hope all of our students will carry with them in school and beyond.

“No Teeth, No Problem”

Some things never go out of style… like big smiles and missing front teeth!  First grader, Oliviae, proudly showed off her brand-new “toothless grin” – and it turns out she’s in good company. I had to share a throwback photo of myself at the exact same stage of life!

Proof that while years may pass, the excitement of losing those first two front teeth (and the confidence to smile wide anyway) is truly timeless. Keep smiling, because around here, every stage is worth celebrating!

Light Up the Scoreboard

This month we had a wonderful community event at Chandler Field, during which the new scoreboard was dedicated and lit up! The scoreboard was a donation from the 2023-25 PTO Executive Board, and community officials were on hand to cheer on our boys baseball team on their season opener. Thank you to Mayor Walter LaCicero for throwing out the first pitch. We had a big win against Bradley Beach - 12-9! Let’s Go, Pirates!!

Helping Your Child Finish The School Year Strong

As we enter the final stretch of the school year, April is the perfect time to refocus, re-energize, and support your child in finishing strong. While spring brings excitement and busy schedules, maintaining consistent routines and positive habits at home can make a meaningful difference in your child’s success.

1. Keep Routines Steady

With longer days and more activities, it can be tempting to relax routines - but consistency is key. Regular bedtimes, structured homework time, and predictable daily schedules help children stay focused and reduce stress.

2. Encourage Effort Over Perfection

At this point in the year, students may feel pressure related to grades, projects, or assessments. Remind your child that effort, persistence, and growth matter more than perfection. Celebrating small wins builds confidence and motivation.

3. Stay Connected to Learning

Ask specific questions about your child’s day:

  • “What was something new you learned today?”

  • “What challenged you?”

    “What are you proud of?”

These conversations show that learning is valued and help children reflect on their progress.

4. Create a Positive Mindset Around Assessments

State assessments are an opportunity for students to show what they know. You can help by keeping the tone calm and encouraging - ensuring your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and knows that doing their best is what matters most.

5. Make Time for Balance

Learning thrives when children feel balanced. Encourage time outdoors, creative play, and family connection. Even simple moments - like a walk, a game, or reading together - can recharge your child and strengthen your bond.

6. Partner with Your School

If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher. Strong communication between home and school helps ensure every child feels supported and successful.

As we move toward the end of the school year, your encouragement and involvement continue to play a vital role in your child’s growth. Thank you for being such an important partner in their learning journey.

Raising Independent Learners at Home

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability to think, problem-solve, and take ownership of their learning. At Lavallette Elementary School, we work every day to build independence in our students - and families play an important role in reinforcing these skills at home.

Here are a few simple ways to encourage independence in your child:

1. Let Them Struggle (Productively)

It can be hard to watch your child feel stuck, but a little productive struggle is where real learning happens. Instead of immediately providing the answer, try asking guiding questions like, “What do you think you should try next?” or “Can you solve this a different way?” This builds confidence and resilience.

2. Encourage Responsibility

Give your child age-appropriate responsibilities, such as packing their backpack, organizing homework, or preparing materials for the next day. These small habits help children develop accountability and a sense of ownership.

3. Support Goal Setting

Help your child set small, achievable goals - whether it’s finishing a book, improving in a subject, or staying organized for a full week. Celebrate progress along the way to reinforce their effort and commitment.

4. Promote Decision-Making

Offer choices when possible: “Would you like to do homework before or after dinner?” or “Which book would you like to read tonight?” Allowing children to make decisions helps them feel empowered and more invested in their responsibilities.

5. Normalize Mistakes

Children are more willing to take risks and try new things when they know mistakes are part of learning. Encourage a mindset that values growth by talking openly about challenges and how we learn from them.

6. Create Space for Independence

Set up a quiet, organized space for your child to complete homework or read independently. aving a dedicated area signals that their work is important and encourages focus.

Building independence doesn’t happen overnight - it’s a gradual process that grows with consistent support and encouragement. By allowing children to take on more responsibility and think for themselves, we are helping them develop skills that will serve them far beyond the classroom.

Thank you for partnering with us in preparing confident, capable learners!
